Special Needs


The Marlene and Joel King Special Needs Department is a co-operative effort by the YM-YWHA and the Miriam Home to develop and deliver leisure and recreational services to children, youth and adults with special needs and to include them in life at the Y”. Participants registered in special needs groups are charged a membership fee of $45. Youth programs are affiliated with the Bronfman Jewish Education Council of Greater Montreal.

Participants have fun playing floor hockey with an equal number of 12 to 15 year old volunteers from local high schools while learning team play, sportsmanship and the rules of the game.

Adolescents and young adult friends meet for supper each week, hang out together listening to music, discussing things of interest in their lives, sometimes going out to bowl or see a movie.

Sunday Leisure Time

This activity provides groups of adults with the opportunuty to share structured leisure time with their friends while being engaged in arts and crafts, table games, music, holidays and festival preparation and the occasional excursion to events in the community.

Sunday Fun iin the Gym

A gym and action program modeled on the Aqua Percept programs. This program is for elementary school-aged children who have physical or intellectual disabilities. This program is generously supported by the Y Cyclothon.

Meet me at the Y

Here adults have an opportunity to contribute toward the planning and organizing of their activities. Group members can go to movies, plays and community events, engage in discussions of recent political and local events and prepare for and celebrate holidays and festivals.

Challah and Flowers

Every Friday, fresh flowers and braided loaves of challah bread are on sale across from Grover Auditorium. Proceeds go to support the Special Needs Department.

Kids on the Block Puppet Troupe

The Kids on the Block Puppet Troupe heightens children's awareness and understanding of what being disabled is really like. They perform using near life-size puppets at various schools around Montreal. Kids on the Block is funded by Federation CJA and is presented as a community service program at the YM-YWHA. Performers are students from St.George's High School and Herzliah High School (St.Laurent).

Club Rendez-Vous / Drop-in Centre The Drop-In Centre meets on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the year, providing a warm welcome and varied programming to people with chronic mental illnesses who live in the community. NEW! Kouleinu Yachad: We All Belong This new and exciting program is being sponsored by the Y Cyclothon and is based on the idea that recreation is for everyone and that everyone belongs here at the Y. Using 1:1 specialized support services, trained and qualified leisure buddies will accompany and assist individual Y members with disabilities in using the athletic and fitness services and facilities offered at the Y. Many programs offered at the Y are open to participants with disabilities. NEW! Urban Explorers New program available to groups and/or individuals with special needs who wish to participate in and explore leisure activities available in the community such as walking tours, museum visits, concerts, exhibitions and community events. Participants will learn to plan their own leisure time and will have the opportunity to learn about community resources and recreation programs and services available in Montreal. Community Coffee House

Alternate Saturday nights. The Community Coffee House meets at the Centre Appleton, 6585 Cote des Neiges, where they enjoy music, dancing and light refreshments in a friendly and social atmosphere.

Miriam Home YM-YWHA Consortium Since September 1997 the Miriam Home and Services and the YM-YWHA have been involved in a consortium to develop and deliver leisure and recreational services to people who are clients of the Miriam Home. Activities take place at the Y, at the Lori Black Community Centre, Caldwell Residence, Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, Queen Elizabeth Health Complex and the community at large. We are always looking for new opportunities and the possibilities to increase involvement within the community. View Group
Sunday Activities for Young Adults Enjoy 17 Sundays a year through the fall, winter and spring months to participate in activities within the community. Come discover the city and its events. Participants branch off into groups of up to six, with two co-ordinators assigned to each group, to discuss options for the day's activities. These activities provide an opportunity to interact, engage in planning the day's events, experience and develop safety habits on public transportation, learn and practise socially appropriate behaviour and, of course, to have fun. Therapeutic Recreation Program Every week 60 people enjoy a wide variety of daytime activities, with as many as 48 participants in a single day! These activities take place five days a week in four different locations. View Group
Lori Black Drop-In Centre Three evenings a week over a 47-week period, 75 participants take part in an array of activities including a video club, art & crafts, dancing, listening to music, karaoke, visits from a rabbi, discussion groups and holiday parties.
