The Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA provides meaningful programming for people with special needs, be they physical, developmental or intellectual. People feel safe and welcome here, they feel they belong, and the Y community would not be the same without them.
- We adapt:
Our leisure and recreational programs are tailored to the needs of each individual.
- We foster growth:
We encourage children, youth and adults to push beyond their comfort levels.
- We inspire:
Our activities pull people away from the sidelines and inspire them to get involved.
- We empower:
The adults in our Chaverim socialization program decide as a group what outings they would like to take and what activities they would like to do.
- We provide respite:
We offer peace of mind to family and caregivers as they take some time to themselves.

Weekly Programs and Drop-In Centre
In addition to our well-established weekly programs – from Sunday Fun in the Gym & Swim for elementary school aged children, to Yedidut for adolescents and Mischakim, Chaverim and Meet Me at the Y for young adults – the Special Needs Department holds a twice-weekly adult Drop In Centre program.
Integration and Sensitization
In 2008 the department introduced the Kouleinu Yachad: We All Belong program, enabling individuals with disabilities to use the athletic and fitness services and facilities of the Y. The program is based on the idea that “recreation is for everyone and that everyone belongs here at the Y. Individualized programs are created to promote the use of the facilities, to encourage individuals to develop their interest in physical activity, sports and leisure.
The Special Needs Department wishes to acknowledge and thank the Y Cycle Program and FEDERATION CJA for their financial support.
Arts for Adults With Special Needs
These programs validate the inclusion of art as a powerful tool for creative expression for everyone. Youth and adults can explore their creativity through drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media. The Special Needs Department acknowledges and thanks the Y Cycle Program, Hester Ruth Katz Memorial Scholarship Fund and FEDERATION CJA for their financial support.
